Famous Father-Son Duos In The Music World

This past Friday night, I headed to Count's Vamp'd to see two of my good friends' bands: Dr Rock and Danger Love. Two of the top bands in Las Vegas. Both bands perform a mix of their own brand of music with songs that are popular in today's music world. Check out their links below and go see them when you get the chance. They be BadA$$!

In a promo that I wrote for the band's event this past week,

I dubbed them as: "2 Generations That Rock".  (A father and son who are both performing musicians).

Dr Rock ( Freddie Paguio) is the father of the lead singer for Danger Love (Fredo Paguio)

I thought to myself, this is something really special. In my 25 years of being a journalist in Las Vegas, I don't think that I've ever seen a father and son perform together. The only father-son duo that comes to my mind is Eddie and Wolfgang Van Halen.

So, I did my research and came up with a list of some pretty famous rock stars and musicians that fit the bill. "2 Generations That Rock"

Let's start out with Eddie and Wolfgang Van Halen.

Eddie Van Halen: One of the greatest guitarists in rock history, Eddie Van Halen redefined what could be done with the electric guitar through his work with Van Halen.

Wolfgang Van Halen: Eddie’s son, Wolfgang, joined Van Halen as the bassist in 2006 and later pursued his own project, Mammoth WVH, showing his talent as a multi-instrumentalist and singer.

-----

Bob Dylan: A monumental figure in rock and folk music, Bob Dylan has been a cultural icon since the 1960s, known for his poetic lyrics and influential songs like "Blowin' in the Wind" and "Like a Rolling Stone."

Jakob Dylan: Frontman of the band The Wallflowers, Jakob made his own mark on the alternative rock scene in the '90s with hits like "One Headlight." Though he is sometimes compared to his father, Jakob’s style and sound are distinct.

-----

John Lennon: As a member of The Beatles, John Lennon helped revolutionize rock music. His solo work, including tracks like "Imagine," further cemented his legacy as a legendary artist.

Julian Lennon: John’s first son, Julian, had a successful solo career in the 1980s with hits like "Too Late for Goodbyes." His music is softer, but he often deals with themes similar to his father’s.

Sean Lennon: John's second son with Yoko Ono, Sean has carved out a niche in alternative rock and experimental music. His work with The Ghost of a Saber Tooth Tiger and solo projects showcases his eclectic and avant-garde approach.

-----

Gregg Allman: Co-founder of The Allman Brothers Band, Gregg was one of the architects of Southern rock. His bluesy vocals and keyboard playing defined hits like "Whipping Post" and "Midnight Rider."

Devon Allman: Carrying on the family legacy, Devon is a respected musician in his own right. He’s the leader of the Allman Betts Band, which merges blues, rock, and Americana influences.

-----

Sting: Frontman of The Police and a successful solo artist, Sting became known for blending rock with reggae, jazz, and classical influences in hits like "Every Breath You Take."

Joe Sumner: Sting’s son, Joe, leads the band Fiction Plane, which emerged in the early 2000s with a sound reminiscent of his father’s early work but with a more modern alternative rock edge.

-----

John & Jason Bonham played together in Led Zeppelin and Foreigner.

Willie & Lukas Nelson, Phil & Nic Collins, and Ziggy Marley & Stephen and Ky-Mani Marley round out my list of famous father-son musicians.

-----

These father-son duos illustrate the diverse ways that rock’s influence is passed down through generations, with each son crafting his own path while honoring his family legacy.

Music Lives On!

Saying Goodbye To The Iconic Tropicana Hotel Las Vegas

Since relocating to Las Vegas in the summer of 1999.  The Las Vegas skyline has definitely changed!

The latest change came this week with the Tropicana Hotel being demolished to make room for the major league A's baseball stadium.

Here are some interesting facts and a bit of history behind the Tropicana Hotel Las Vegas.

The Tropicana Hotel first opened on April 4, 1957, and was one of the last remaining original resorts from the golden age of the Las Vegas Strip. It was developed by Ben Jaffe, a Miami hotelier, who wanted to bring a South Beach-inspired vibe to Las Vegas.

When it opened, the Tropicana was known for its luxurious ambiance and tropical theme. It quickly earned the nickname “The Tiffany of the Strip” due to its upscale atmosphere, which set it apart from the glitzier, mob-influenced casinos of the time.

The Tropicana was designed to transport guests to a tropical paradise, with lush landscaping, palm trees, and pools that evoked a South Seas or Caribbean setting. The original design also featured a large "Tropicana Pavilion," where visitors could enjoy entertainment and shows.

Over the decades, the Tropicana changed ownership several times, including prominent operators like the Hilton Corporation, Aztar Corporation, and Penn National Gaming. Each ownership brought renovations and new features, but the hotel retained its tropical theme.

The Tropicana had a long history of hosting world-class entertainers and shows. Notable performers have included legends like Sammy Davis Jr. and Dean Martin. The hotel was also known for its "Folies Bergère" revue, which ran for nearly 50 years, from 1959 to 2009, making it one of the longest-running shows in Las Vegas history.

Other engagements included "Raiding The Rock Vault" and "Legends In Concert"

The Tropicana was featured in Viva Las Vegas (1964) with Elvis Presley, Diamonds Are Forever (1971) from the James Bond franchise, and The Godfather (1972), adding to its iconic status.

Despite changes, the Tropicana was considered a piece of Las Vegas history. Its longevity, its connection to classic Vegas entertainment, and its tropical-themed architecture earned it a special place in the city’s cultural landscape.

As of 2:30am on October 9th, 2024. The Tropicana was no more... Demolished but not forgotten.

Thanks for the Memories!

What Do Famous Rock Stars Do To Chill ..Famous Rock Stars Hobbies

All work and no play makes a rock star a dull musician.

Many famous rock stars have hobbies that provide a glimpse into their personalities beyond the stage.

Here are a few rock stars that I think you'll recognize, and what they do to chill away from the stage.

Bruce Dickinson (Iron Maiden) - Aviation

Bruce Dickinson is a licensed pilot and even flew commercial planes for a time. He also owns an aviation company and has been involved in various aviation-related ventures.

Brian May (Queen) - Astrophysics

In addition to being Queen’s legendary guitarist, Brian May is an accomplished astrophysicist. He earned a PhD in astrophysics from Imperial College London and co-authored research papers.

Eric Clapton - Fishing

Clapton has a deep love for fly fishing. He has often spoken about how fishing helps him relax and disconnect from the pressures of fame and music.

Alex Lifeson (Rush) - Painting & Golf

The guitarist for Rush is not only a talented musician but also enjoys painting and golf. His artwork has even been auctioned for charity.

Eddie Vedder (Pearl Jam) - Surfing

Eddie Vedder has long been associated with surfing, reflecting his laid-back persona. He's frequently seen riding waves in his free time, and surfing culture influences his music.

Kirk Hammett (Metallica) - Horror Memorabilia Collection

The Metallica guitarist has a massive collection of horror memorabilia, particularly vintage movie posters, and has even published a book showcasing his collection.

Besides his legendary guitar skills, Jimi Hendrix had a passion for drawing. Some of his sketches and visual artworks were displayed in exhibitions after his death.

Flea (Red Hot Chili Peppers) - Bee Keeping

Flea, the bassist of the Red-Hot Chili Peppers, is an avid beekeeper and has shared his passion for helping to preserve bee populations.

Keith Richards (The Rolling Stones) - Book Reading

Keith Richards is an avid reader and even released a memoir titled Life. He has expressed that reading helped him get through tough times.

These hobbies often reflect the personal interests of rock stars, showing that they have creative and intellectual pursuits outside of their music careers.

What do you do to relax and to get away from it all?

I listen to music and write about it!

My little slice of Heaven.

Famous Rockstars And Halloween

It's October! Halloween is just around the corner.

What goes with Halloween?

Trick or Treat, Ghosts, Skeletons, Costumes & Candy...

And how about Rockstars?

Halloween and rockstars go hand in hand, with many iconic musicians embracing the spooky holiday by incorporating dark, gothic, and eerie themes into their performances and personas.

When I say rockstars and Halloween. Who do you think of?

Here are some famous rockstars known for their connection to Halloween in one way or another.

Alice Cooper, often called the "Godfather of Shock Rock," is synonymous with Halloween. His concerts feature horror-themed theatrics, including guillotines, electric chairs, and fake blood, making every performance feel like a haunted house. He also hosts Halloween-themed concerts and events.

Rob Zombie is another rockstar whose name is almost interchangeable with Halloween. Known for his horror-inspired music and films, Zombie's love for the macabre is evident in both his solo work and his time with White Zombie. He's also directed several iconic horror films, including House of 1000 Corpses and Halloween (2007).

The "Prince of Darkness," Ozzy Osbourne, is a Halloween staple, thanks to his association with Black Sabbath and his spooky, doom-laden music. Songs like "Bark at the Moon" and "Mr. Crowley" fit right into his Halloween playlists.

Marilyn Manson's shock-rock persona and theatrical stage shows have earned him a permanent place in Halloween culture. With his love for the grotesque, dark imagery, and themes of horror, his concerts during the Halloween season are highly anticipated events.

Kiss, with their elaborate costumes and face paint, often appear in Halloween imagery. Gene Simmons' demon makeup and the overall theatrics of the band make them Halloween favorites.

Slipknot's horror-inspired masks and chaotic performances create a year-round Halloween atmosphere. Each band member wears a distinctive mask, adding an eerie, unsettling vibe to their haunting shows.

These rockstars not only embrace the spooky aesthetic but have become cultural icons associated with Halloween through their music, fashion, and performances. Whether through shock rock, horror themes, or theatrical performances, they've helped shape the holiday’s connection to rock music.

Why Rock Stars Become Rock Stars

Have you ever wondered how rock stars became rock stars?

Rock stars often choose their profession for various reasons. Many of which stem from deeply personal motivations, cultural influences, and the unique appeal of the rock music world. Some just love to perform.

Here are some reasons and famous examples of how (and why) rock stars are where they are today.

----------

Many rock stars are driven by an early, deep passion for music. They often grow up listening to bands and artists they admire, leading them to learn instruments, write songs, and pursue music as a lifelong passion.

Jimi Hendrix was influenced by blues and rock legends like B.B. King and Chuck Berry, which led him to develop his iconic guitar style.

Kurt Cobain was drawn to punk rock and grunge, starting Nirvana to express his angst and dissatisfaction with mainstream culture.

----------

Rock music allows for a high level of personal and artistic expression. Many rock stars are attracted to the genre's freedom, where they can write lyrics, create soundscapes, and develop unique personas that align with their vision of life, emotions, or societal issues.

David Bowie used his Ziggy Stardust persona to push the boundaries of identity, gender, and art.

Freddie Mercury was known for his theatrical performances and flamboyant stage presence, combining his love for music with his love for performance art.

----------

Rock music has long been associated with rebellion, challenging social norms, authority, and tradition. Many rock stars are drawn to the idea of non-conformity and use music as a way to challenge the status quo or express dissatisfaction with societal rules.

The Rolling Stones embodied a rebellious image, defying mainstream expectations with their controversial lyrics and attitudes.

Punk bands like The Sex Pistols built entire careers around opposing established systems, reflecting their desire to disrupt the conventional.

----------

The allure of fame and the chance to influence culture and society plays a big role. Becoming a rock star offers a platform to be seen, heard, and idolized. The idea of impacting millions through music, lifestyle, and ideology can be very appealing.

Elvis Presley became an icon, not just for his music, but for his style and cultural influence in breaking down racial and social barriers.

Madonna (though more pop-oriented, she’s often associated with rock rebellion) used her fame to continuously shape and challenge societal views on sexuality, feminism, and expression.

----------

Many rock musicians have used music as a way to escape personal struggles, emotional pain, or difficult environments. Rock music, with its emotional intensity and raw energy, often provides an outlet for artists to channel their personal experiences into something meaningful.

Janis Joplin often sang about loneliness and heartbreak, reflecting on her own personal struggles.

Eddie Vedder from Pearl Jam has talked about using music to deal with feelings of alienation and loss, particularly through his lyrics.

----------

For some, being a rock star is about finding or creating a community of like-minded individuals. Bands often form from friendships or mutual interests, and the music scene can become a second family or a place of belonging.

Bands like The Beatles and Led Zeppelin grew from the camaraderie and shared vision of the members, leading to lifelong bonds between the musicians.

----------

Many rock stars are driven by the high they get from performing live. The energy of the crowd, the lights, the sound, and the chance to be the center of attention for thousands of fans can be a major motivating factor.

Mick Jagger of The Rolling Stones is known for his electrifying stage presence and love for performing live.

Bruce Springsteen puts on marathon live performances, fueled by his connection with the audience and his love for the stage.

----------

The cultural and historical moment can also play a huge role in someone’s decision to pursue rock music. Many rock stars emerge during times of cultural upheaval or change when their music reflects the sentiments of a generation.

The 1960s counterculture movement helped fuel the careers of bands like The Beatles, Jimi Hendrix, and The Doors.

The grunge movement of the 1990s, represented by Nirvana and Pearl Jam, tapped into Generation X's disillusionment and frustration.

----------

A love for music and for entertaining. For deep-seated personal reasons. For social, or for cultural influences. I'd say that the rock stars that I mentioned in my blog chose their correct career paths!

Stories Behind Iconic Rock Songs That Were Written On The Spot

All iconic rock songs are not created equal.

Some iconic rock songs only took a few minutes to write. And some iconic rock songs took forever and a day to create. Two great examples come from Guns N' Roses. "Sweet Child O' Mine" was written under a day. While "November Rain" took Axl Rose eight years to complete.

In my blog today I'll be exploring a handful of Iconic Rock songs that were said to have been written "on the spot". Despite being quickly composed, these songs have become timeless classics as "Sweet Child O' Mine" has...

Here are a few rock songs that made it to the top of the charts that I think you'll recognize.

"(I Can’t Get No) Satisfaction" – The Rolling Stones

Written by Keith Richards and Mick Jagger in 1965, the riff that defines "Satisfaction" came to Richards in the middle of the night. He reportedly woke up, recorded the riff on a tape recorder, and then fell back asleep. The rest of the song was completed quickly, with Jagger writing the lyrics in a matter of minutes. The song went on to become one of The Rolling Stones' most iconic tracks.

"Smoke on the Water" – Deep Purple

The signature riff of "Smoke on the Water" was written by Ritchie Blackmore on the spot while the band was rehearsing. The lyrics, which describe a fire during a Frank Zappa concert in Montreux, Switzerland, were quickly penned afterward based on real events.

"All Along the Watchtower" – Jimi Hendrix

Although originally written by Bob Dylan, Hendrix's legendary version was almost entirely composed in the studio. He and his band were jamming in the studio when they began developing their unique arrangement of the song. Hendrix recorded and re-arranged the track so swiftly that it was released shortly after its initial creation.

"Whole Lotta Love" – Led Zeppelin

Jimmy Page came up with the riff for "Whole Lotta Love" during a quick jam session in the studio. Robert Plant then improvised much of the vocal melody and lyrics based on a song by blues singer Willie Dixon. The song was recorded and finalized very quickly and went on to become a defining track for Led Zeppelin.

"Born to Run" – Bruce Springsteen

Though Bruce Springsteen spent a long time perfecting the final version of "Born to Run," the initial idea and structure of the song came to him very quickly in one creative burst. The inspiration hit Springsteen during a late-night writing session, and the core of the song was completed that night. The song became Springsteen's breakout hit and a rock anthem.

These examples show that some of the most iconic rock songs came to life in spontaneous moments of creativity, some in dreams, in only a day, and some in only a few minutes.

Iconic Rock Songs Have No Time Frame For Creativity!

Crazy Warmup Habits Of Legendary Rockstars

When I'm covering music events for the media. I usually try to visit the bands and musicians backstage before their performances. To pick up on their vibes for their show, to take a picture or two, and to talk to them to see what's been going on in their lives. I've even worked in an interview or two over the years. But what I find most fascinating is what these amazing music artists do before they hit the stage.

For my blog today. I thought it would be interesting to find out what some legendary rockstar's pre-show warmup habits are. Here are some warmup habits that some of the biggest names in rock are rumored to practice or have practiced at once in their careers.

It’s said that Ozzy Osbourne would sometimes take his eccentricities to the next level, biting the heads off bats and other creatures, though these moments were more shocking stunts than actual warm-up routines. Still, the image of Ozzy pre-show is often tied to his outrageous stage presence. What do you think Ozzy did before hitting the stage? Your guess is as good as mine!

David Lee Roth incorporated martial arts into his warmup routine. A trained martial artist, Roth would practice high kicks, splits, and acrobatic moves before a show, preparing for the physicality of his stage performances.

Keith Richards was known for always having a cigarette in hand, and this extended into his pre-show routine. Instead of a traditional warm-up, Richards would relax with a cigarette and a drink, believing that calming his nerves in this way was all he needed before hitting the stage.

Steven Tyler has a unique method of warming up his iconic voice. He’s known to drink throat-soothing tea with honey, but he also does a lot of loud vocal exercises and screams to get his voice ready. His vocal warmups would be loud and intense, matching the energy of his live shows.

James Hetfield takes an aggressive approach to his pre-show warmups. Hetfield is said to engage in boxing to get his blood pumping before heading out on stage. His physical warmups are matched by intense vocal exercises, preparing him for the raw, aggressive sound that Metallica is known for.

Mick Jagger prepares for shows by going through a combination of vocal warm-ups and dance routines. Jagger takes to the treadmill before every show for a 30-minute run. Can you say, "In Shape Rockstar"?

Jimi Hendrix had a calm and focused pre-show routine. He would often sit alone with his guitar, playing softly and experimenting with new riffs. It was almost a meditative process, allowing him to center himself before the wild creativity he unleashed on stage.

Roger Daltrey is famous for his signature microphone-twirling move. As part of his warmup, he would practice this on stage before shows, getting the rhythm and movement right to avoid mishaps during the performance.

Kurt Cobain was known for his introverted personality and preferred to spend time alone before shows, often isolating himself in a quiet room to mentally prepare. He wasn’t one for elaborate routines; rather, he valued his solitude, getting into a contemplative mindset before exploding on stage.

Axel Rose is notorious for his late starts at shows, but before hitting the stage, he would spend time alone doing extensive vocal exercises to prepare for the high notes and growls in songs like Sweet Child O’ Mine and Welcome to the Jungle.

These warmup routines are as legendary as the artists themselves, showcasing the unique methods rockstars use to channel their creative energy before performing onstage.
